New Rose's event for 2011

Rose's@WGW (Whitby Goth Weekend)

Four nights Friday 1st to Monday 4th April 2011

IMPORTANT NOTE Re DATES:

The Whitby Goth Weekends have many events organised by two rival camps: the 'official' events organised by the originator of the WGWs (Jo Hampshire, and her followers) and various unofficial fringe events organised by others. Previously they have all taken place the same weekend so it did not matter too much which events were your preference. But regrettably in 2011, for both the spring and autumn weekends, the rival camps have settled on different weekends which can only cause a split with followers having to decide which group to support.

For us for the next spring event, I have decided to go along with the 'alternative' rather than the 'official' dates, i.e. the first weekend in April (the official dates are the weekend before). This choice is because I believe the 'alternative events' are of greater interest to our group (including the club nights at the Metropole which I attended last April). I doubt many of us would be interested in the heavy rock bands playing at the Spa which is the core of the official events. Also I feel there may be a greater number of goths in town for the April dates. The various tourist boards have also been giving out the April dates for the Whitby Goth Weekend for some time before the 'official' dates were belatedly announced.

My only concern is that with the WGW split offer two weekends there will be less of a 'buzz' in town with fewer goths wandering the streets than what I experienced last year. If anyone decides to join us, they must realise it might not be quite up to the hype I gave for last April's event, but the event is so huge, I think it will still be a great experience.

I attended my first Whitby Goth Weekend last April and thoroughly enjoyed it – I’ll be going again whenever I can in future! I thought many others, particularly those in the transgender community, would enjoy these events too if they gave them a try. But perhaps, like me prior to my first WGW, they might be unsure about what to expect, don’t know where to go, and have no-one to go along with. So, having organised many other events over the years, I am presenting here an opportunity for anyone to join a group of us for the next April WGW. Please read on if you think you might be interested …

First, to wet your appetite and give you an idea as to what to expect, please see my report here on my attendance of the WGW April 2010. Then, if you feel you'd like to join us, please register your interest using the form here.

If you are interested, please register ASAP as there is always a huge demand for accommodation during the WGWs and most places usually book up very quickly.

Self-catering Apartments

Self-catering apartments have been chosen because they offer some advantages compared to using a hotel or guest house. Compared with a similarly priced guest house room, an apartment provides much more spacious private accommodation with the option of self catering. I have chosen those provided by Discovery Accommodation because they have a large number of apartments available, most of them in very close proximity in the heart of Whitby, and because of the additional facilities they offer exclusively to their guests, including:

  • Leisure facilities including a heated indoor swimming pool, sauna and Scalectrix, available to all guests for £3 a session.
  • Breakfast and other meals available in the main office coffee lounge.
  • A limited number of parking spaces at £5 per space per night. Book early if you want one. There is some free on-street parking not too far from the apartments but it is not easy to find a space during the WGWs.
  • Function room available. If we have a large enough group to warrant it and there is a desire for it, I propose hiring this for the Friday night to provide a First-night Welcome Get-together with food and drinks available.
  • All apartments have wheel-chair access for disabled.

All the flats come with a fully equipped kitchen area, lounge/dining room, and bath/shower room. They all have a Sky TV, DVD (full DVD library in office) and music system.

The flats booked initially will all be in the same or next door building (this may not be possible for any flats added at a later date).

Four Nights - Friday to Monday

We will be booking the apartments for a minimum of 4 nights Friday to Monday (but you don't have to stay all four nights) with the option of extra nights as below. Most hotels/guest houses in Whitby require a minimum stay of 4 nights at WGWs and Friday to Monday has been chosen to take in the popular Sexy Sunday and Manic Monday nights at the Metropole (but it is up to you whether you go to any of these nights). We will probably also arrange a photo shoot at Whitby Abbey on the Monday similar to the one we had last April as you can see here.

Prices:

All the above are the basic price per person assuming the flat is fully occupied for the nights indicated. Anyone wanting a double bedroom as a single the price would be twice the basic price. Z-beds are available for an extra person in an apartment but everyone in that flat would have to agree to the presence of the extra person. The price for the extra person would be substantially less than the above figures and everyone else in the flat would have a reduction too.
